From there, Alves won seven of his next eight UFC fights, including a victory over Karo Parisyan. This landed him a fight against legendary former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 85.
Though Alves missed weight for the bout, Hughes still decided to fight. In the end, Alves was dominant, eventually stopping Hughes by second round TKO with a flying knee and the punches on the ground that followed.
Becoming The Pitbull
Alves received his nickname The Pitbull after knocking out two opponents in one night during his first Muay Thai tournament . He was only a teenager at the time and had been so nervous before the fight that he couldn’t eat. This caused him to go backstage and eat ravenously with his hands after the fight. His coach noticed and indicated that he both fought and ate like a pitbull, so the nickname was fitting.
“The way I’m shaped, my ears, I do kind of look like a pitbull,” Alves told Fight! Magazine in their July 2009 issue. “Everything happens for a reason, I guess. You become what you want.”
Some Tattoos
Alves has a verse from the Bible, Philippians 4:13, inked on his body. Philippians 4:13 notes the following: “All things are possible through God who gives me strength.” In addition, there is a baby wrestling a koi fish and dragon tattoos on his arm as well.
