About Thiago Alves
Alves started training in Muay Thai at the age of 14, began competing seriously at 15, and won his first professional fight at 18. Initially, he stayed away from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as he found its practitioners in Fortaleza arrogant. In fact, he got into a street fight with some to help a friend in his youth. Apparently, one of the guys hit him in the back of the head. Alves turned around and knocked him out.
Eventually, Alves began training in MMA at the age of 17 and won his first MMA fight in 2001 over Wilson Belchoir by KO. At 19, he moved from Brazil to Florida for training.

The UFC and Beating Matt Hughes
In 2005, Alves made his UFC debut against Spencer Fisher at Ultimate Fight Night 2. Though he fought impressively, Fisher was able to catch him with a triangle choke in round 2 that ended the fight. From there, Alves won seven of his next eight UFC fights, including a victory over Karo Parisyan. This landed him a fight against legendary former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes at UFC 85.
Though Alves missed weight for the bout, Hughes still decided to fight. In the end, Alves was dominant, eventually stopping Hughes by second round TKO with a flying knee and the punches on the ground that followed.
Becoming The Pitbull
Alves received his nickname The Pitbull after knocking out two opponents in one night during his first Muay Thai tournament . He was only a teenager at the time and had been so nervous before the fight that he couldn’t eat. This caused him to go backstage and eat ravenously with his hands after the fight. His coach noticed and indicated that he both fought and ate like a pitbull, so the nickname was fitting.
“The way I’m shaped, my ears, I do kind of look like a pitbull,” Alves told Fight! Magazine in their July 2009 issue. “Everything happens for a reason, I guess. You become what you want.”
Alves has a verse from the Bible, Philippians 4:13, inked on his body. Philippians 4:13 notes the following: “All things are possible through God who gives me strength.” In addition, there is a baby wrestling a koi fish and dragon tattoos on his arm as well.
Alves is a huge welterweight that is brutally strong. Along with this, his takedown defense is stellar. This allows him to do what he likes to most.
Use his Muay Thai kickboxing skills, devastating power, and explosive athletic ability to dominate and KO opponents.
Beyond that, Alves also has solid submissions and submission defense.
Alves is the middle child of three boys and is reportedly close with his mother.
