About Shane Carwin
Simply put, Gabriel Gonzaga is a very dangerous MMA fighter. So when Shane Carwin took him on at UFC 96, the world was watching to see if the huge heavyweight had the right stuff. When Gonzaga stunned Carwin with two right hands and then took the former wrestler down, the stage was set. Could Carwin manage to come back?
Let’s put it this way, moments later
Carwin got up, landed a big right hand, and was enjoying a first round KO victory.
American former mixed martial artist Shane Carwin has a net worth of $4.5 million dollars, as of 2021. Carwin is a former Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion. He competed in the Heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
- Date of Birth and Family Background: Shane Carwin was born on January 4, 1975 in Greeley, Colorado. He and his two brothers were raised by a single mother whose main goal was to make sure that all of her sons received a college education.
- Training Camp and Fighting Organization: Carwin trains out of Jackson’s Submission Fighting, which is based in Albuquerque, Novel Mexico. He fights for the UFC.
College Football
Carwin was an excellent football player and wrestler in high school that was overlooked by larger college programs, perhaps because of his size (171 pound weight class) and desire to participate in both sports in college. This led him to small Western State College, where he was a two-time All American football player. Unfortunately, the surgery he required for injuries sustained during his senior season- three bulging discs, one ruptured- cost him a spot in the NFL draft.
That disappointment led him back to college for his final year of wrestling eligibility, which may have been a blessing in disguise.
Wrestling
Carwin was a two-time NCAA Division II heavyweight runner-up in wrestling previous to his football disappointments. However, when he came back for his final season he managed to nab the NCAA Division II national championship in the heavyweight division.
Other Job
Most top tier MMA fighters don’t have another job; they simply fight for a living. But Carwin, a man that has achieved a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines as well as a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Technology from Western State College, continues to also work as an engineer.
MMA Startnings
Carwin became interested in fighting after his high school wrestling coach, Ron Waterman, asked him to help him prepare for one of his fights. Eventually, that led to him stopping Carlton Jones on October 14, 2005 via a submission due to strikes after someone dropped off of a WEC card that Waterman was fighting on. Soon after, Carwin began training in Denver with Nate Marquardt.
Personal Life
Carwin is married to Lani and has a son (Camden) from a previous marriage. He and Lani are currently expecting their first child together.
