There are deep secrets about marriage that only married couples know from firsthand experience.

Marriage. A dated social practice that has the potential to be incredibly beautiful and terrifying at the same time. The feeling of being in love with someone you’re sure who you want to spend the rest of your life with is unrivaled in the universal sphere of emotions. For those of us who have yet to tie the knot, we have some vague ideas of what marriage would be like. We have borne witness to our parents, our friends who have gotten married, and of course, the Hollywood movies that depict all sorts of romantic stories.

However, what most people don’t realize, there is more to marriage than meets the surface. It’s not always going to be what it looks like from the outside. There are deep secrets about marriage that only married couples know from firsthand experience.

Here are the top secrets that single ladies need to know about marriage:

1. You Will No Longer Acquire Full Ownership of Your Own Time

Time is no longer your own. You always need to allow time for your relationship and that means giving way to your shared needs as a couple. Your schedule needs to revolve around each other and you no longer have the luxury of planning for just yourself. You need to be able to schedule your personal life and your life as a wife in a way that promotes harmony in the household.

2. You Won’t Feel as Adventurous as You Once Did

Gone are the adventurous and curious days of youth where finding yourself in a vast world the absolute priority. You’re stable and safe now. You have a foundation set for the rest of your life and you find it difficult to leave that foundation for any prolonged period of time.

3. Your Thoughts of Freedom Will Change

Nope, you can’t just buy that lavish piece of jewelry or that luxurious handbag for no reason. You can’t just go out for a night on the town whenever you desire. You’ve committed to someone for the rest of your life and you need to stick with that commitment. You’re not entirely imprisoned though, but you definitely won’t be as free as you once were.

4. Privacy Will Be Difficult to Approach By

Privacy is a luxury rarely afforded to any people who are married. Especially when the kids come, you’ll definitely find it hard to have any alone time for yourself. If your marriage is strong enough though, you won’t miss that solitude also much.

5. Eating Will Be a Dinky More Complicated Than It Should

You will end up fighting with each other a lot and it’ll only be because of food. Should you stay in or dine out? If you’re going out, where are you eating? If you’re staying in, what are you cooking? These are questions that lead to unnecessary squabbles and complications. You can’t make that choice on your own anymore and confrontations may arise.

6. Your Thoughts of Fun Revolve Around Lounging Around at Home

You’re domesticated. From the very meaning of that word, you shudder at the thought of going out and mingling with other people. You’re perfectly comfortable with lounging around on the couch and browsing through Netflix with your hubby.

7. Your Lifestyle Will Alter Itself Dramatically

The changes to your lifestyle won’t be as subtle as you expected them to be. Married life just changes people and it’s a dramatic change at that. The way you go about your life is no longer just up to your own discretion. You essentially share your life with another human being now and that will require some adjustments.

8. You Now Acquire a TeamMate for Getting Things Done

If life is a game, then getting married is the perfect metaphor for getting a team-mate to help you navigate through the game’s challenges. Your spouse is now your partner in life and love. Your husband will be there to help you get through your troubles that you no longer have to face on your own.

9. You Acquire To Work To Stay Passionate

Passion and intimacy are fairly easy to come by in the early stages of a relationship. However, going into the depths of marriage, you’re going to have to work at staying passionate about each other. You need to work constantly making the other fall in love with you all over again every day for the rest of your life. It won’t be easy, but if your love is strong enough, it shouldn’t be a problem.

19. Ownership is a Shared Concept Now

It’s part of the vows that you uttered during your ceremony. Your life is no longer your own and you share practically the entirety of your being. You’ve given yourself to be each other and that can be both a beauty and a curse. Executen’t miss out on making your married life a beauty though and understand that you’re lucky to have found someone to spend the rest of your life with.
