Now more than ever, the eyes are placed in so much strain. You are using your peepers to stare at a computer screen during work hours or at the display panel of your cell phone when getting in touch with family and friends. In this day and age, no one can afford to have impaired eyesight. That is why your eyes need all the help they can get to stay healthy and allow you to enjoy a sharp vision. Below you can find certain things that can help keep your eyes in tip-top shape.

Watch What You Put in Your Mouth

Your diet plays a crucial role in the health of your eyes and the sharpness of your vision. Luckily, foods that you need to have plenty of are easy to spot at the grocery store and farmers’ market — orange, yellow and green fruits, and vegetables! The likes of carrots, papaya, sweet potatoes, oranges, corn, kale, spinach, broccoli, and collard greens are great examples.

All of them are wonderful sources of beta carotene, a type of vitamin A that promotes excellent eye health. Green leafy vegetables are top sources of lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients that help prevent macular degeneration and blindness.

It’s also a good idea for you to load up on foods with essential fatty acids that boost your eye health by bolstering the membranes of the various cells in the eyes. Some examples are salmon, sardines, flaxseeds, almonds, and soy.

Give Your Peepers Their Regular Dose of Exercise

There are certain eye exercises which may be done at any given time or day, whether you are watching TV or resting in bed. Doing them regularly helps promote optimal vision as well as ward off those annoying floaters.

Rolling your eyes 10 times clockwise and another 10 times counterclockwise is the simplest exercise there is. Another one is briskly rubbing your palms together until they’re warm, and placing them against your eyes for about 5 seconds. Repeat the procedure 3 times and make sure that your hands are clean before beginning the exercise.

Another exercise requires you to grab a pen. Hold it with one hand at arm’s length. Focus your eyes on it. Slowly bring the pen closer to your face until it’s just about 6 inches away from your nose. Throughout the process, try to keep your eyes focused on the pen. Slowly take back the pen at arm’s length once more. Everything should be done 10 times.

Allow Your Eyes to Rest and Recover

If your work requires you to stare at a computer screen for prolonged periods, remember to give your peepers a break for at least 10 minutes every hour. The same is true if you are reading a novel, watching TV or playing video games. It’s also important for you to get a good night’s sleep to allow your eyes plenty of time to rest and recover.
